Soon after proposing Changing New York, her grand project of documenting the city, Berenice Abbott snapped this image of a gentleman perusing this newsstand in the Gramercy neighborhood. Though she couldn't have known it at the time, Abbott captured a fascinating slice in the history of the printed word. It was a time where there was a magazine for every interest, from romance to detective stories, and to read one cost you only as much as a Double Rich Malted Milk with Horton's Ice Cream. Newsstands are still an important part of the New York City landscape, but just as the title of Abbott's project suggests, that landscape is constantly changing.
