Artist Statement

Pete has always been a night person. He likes nothing better than to be alone in the middle of nowhere, on a country road for hours on end. On again, off again, he has been making photographs at night for almost 30 years. Throughout those years, he has sporadically taken pictures of fireflies, finding satisfaction in the challenge. Only in the past few years has technology provided new tools that enable an enhanced ability to see in the dark, minus many of the limitations of film. While he is willing to travel a couple miles for fireflies, most of his night work is done within walking distance of his home in a small village in Upstate New York.

Why We Love It

To be fair, city dwellers will likely have a bit of a hike ahead of them to reach so pastoral a setting. As the title suggests, Mauney made Fireflies under the full moon along the White Clay Kill, Tivoli, NY 7/9/14 about 2 hours outside NYC. Then again, location’s just a minor detail in what makes this photograph magic. The composition frames a path, encircled by dark green foliage and dazzling streaks of firefly glow, drawing the eye in toward the center as if to lead the viewer deeper into the wood. Mauney’s pressed pause on the firefly flickering so their illumination is suspended midair, like fairy lights. Pete Mauney

Pete Mauney works in Tivoli, New York, where he lives with his photographer wife and two young children. He studied film at NYU before taking a break, eventually receiving his BA and then MFA in photography from Bard College. Having moved often growing up, he has rooted in Tivoli, where he has been for almost 25 years. Always a night person, he has been photographing in the dark since his first serious roll of film.
