The 20x200 Weekender: Spring into Art!

Is it warm outside? Do we actually *want* to be out-of-doors? After such a long + brutal winter, these balmy spring days are a welcome surprise! If you're looking for an art-filled adventure this weekend, we've put together a list of a few things you might enjoy! – Team 20x200

1. Tod Seelie's Show
Following up on his book BRIGHT NIGHTS:Photographs of Another New York and over a decade of photographing NYC, Seelie now turns his camera towards the other coast with his current show and corresponding zine entitled Outland Empire. In its last weekend at Superchief Gallery in L.A., the show captures Seelie's documentary-like style and penchant for "the decisive moment" when choosing what to shoot. Nothing is staged or planned, but even the most unexpected moments are captured.

2. Life of Cats at the Japan Society
Opening this weekend, Life of Cats: Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection is made up of almost one hundred works by notable ukiyo-e artists, such as Utagawa Hiroshige. The show covers multiple centuries as well as various genres, as reviewed in the New York Times. And while the cats you see in these woodcuts may not seem related to their modern counterparts,  they still capture the influence, relationship, and lovable character of our feline friends.

3. Alec Soth's Songbook
Bringing together years of photographs and stripping them of their titles and contexts, Songbook provides a "rambling, witty, and wistful examination of contemporary American culture," not to mention some gorgeous images. On a tour of American and international galleries, Soth's New York portion is closing at Sean Kelly Gallery before continuing on in San Fran and beyond.

4. Darius Himes' Christie's Picks
Currently the International Head of Photographs at Christie's, Himes knows what he's talking about. So when he chose his favorites from the collection of William T. Hillman and they were all women artists with primarily female subjects, there's no doubting the influence that these photographers have had on the medium. From pioneers such as Julia Margaret Cameron to innovators like Alison Rossiter, this assortment of pieces shows the real value of the female perspective.

5. William Wegman's Exhibition
We can never get enough of Bill and this show is no exception! Currently on display at Imago Galleries in Palm Desert, Good Dogs on Nice Furniture is more than a great (and appropriate) title. It continues with Wegman's exploration into various art movements - such as pop, minimal, and conceptual - and makes them accessible and beloved by his entire audience.
