I’ve been making a painting every day in my sketchbook for the last 5 years to keep me inspired and playful. When I think about what to paint, I tend to choose a subject with a lot of pattern, texture and color, something a little magical. The Lemur is wonderful because of its big striped tail and fab face mask. I went to town on the background and made the jungle as bright and floral-y as I could—just a bit of reality and a bit of fantasy.
It’s patently impossible to forgo this painting’s feel-good energy. The way Lewis painted the lemur’s adorably animated expression, the lush melange of bright buds, leaves and branches, the delightful density of all her detail work—this is the ideal artwork for a pick-me-up, a baby shower present, or an injection of joy in an otherwise reserved art collection.
