The “Fragments” monoprints (one of a kind impressions) combine elements from two woodcut projects. I always save incomplete prints, extras and misprints. Eventually, unfinished work emerges from my flat files and gets combined with a current project. The circles and rings are from a color study series inspired by a traditional color wheel. The spirals are graphics generated using a harmonograph drawing apparatus. This tool employs pendulums to draw analog images as it swings and loses momentum. The drawings made with a sharpie were carved into wood to make impressions on paper. The spirals were layered over the circles to generate moiré effects and unexpected optical results. As a final operation I cut the paper to the printed edge to create dramatic compositions.

Nutini’s Fragments I and II celebrate the art of the process—the fruit of many projects come together. Beginning with circles and rings printed from woodcut blocks in traditional color wheel studies, Fragments I and II then come alive with striking spirals created with a harmonograph drawing apparatus. Employing pendulums, the harmonograph produces analog images as it swings and loses momentum creating an organic dynamism. By layering these distinct methods, Nutini achieves moiré effects and unexpected optical illusions further amplified when he cuts dramatic compositions from the whole piece giving form to his aptly titled Fragments.
