It’s that time of year again—your local Walgreen’s has doused itself in the Pepto-hued glow of pre-Valentine’s propaganda with a perpetual party growing in the Hallmark aisle. Everyone loves a good candy deal, but after two years in sweatpants who doesn’t need a little extra glitz and glam? Dust off those diamonds with the ultimate Galentine’s day vibes in our newest Vintage Edition, Untitled (Champagne & Cigarette) by Willem van de Poll.
We rolled out our first van de Poll edition just before NYE, and much like its predecessor, Untitled (Champagne & Cigarette) is a total M O O D. Shot in 1936 for Vogue and De Bijenkorf department stores, the photo is a master class in atmosphere. A woman’s hand festooned in gemmed finery rests delicately on a single glass of champagne while the other lightly clutches a lit cigarette. The stage is set upon a pristinely pressed tablecloth bathed in bright, theatrical lighting, as if we’ve caught madame mid-digestif following a decadent meal. Yet, using soft blurring and pointed focus, van de Poll ensures the jewels are the true stars of the show.
Van de Poll was a champion of the New Photography movement, which prioritized graphic design-infused image composition over subject. Characterized by close-cropping, strategic blurring, and unusual angles, van de Poll's interpretation of this photographic style is splendidly cinematic. And whether you’re in for a glammed out Galentine’s, a romantic V-day date with a total 10, or a cozy snackfest with your Saint Bernard (an obvious 15/10), this b+w beaut will get you in the mood for all the Feb 14th festivities.
With art for everyone, Team 20x200
