New! Always Choose Happy 💓 (Citizen printer Amos Kennedy, Jr. leads the way.)

We have choice in our mindset, and American printer, papermaker and book artist Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. knows it. In Always Choose Happy, the legendary artist’s newest edition with 20x200, he lays it out as only he can: boldly, succinctly, triumphantly. Each 12.5” x 19” print is utterly unique in detail and is hand-pulled by Kennedy at his letterpress studio in Detroit, Michigan in multiple punchy colorways—the one you get will be a surprise, as they're all singular stunners with color combinations that differ because of Kennedy's individuated process.

We have 100 Always Choose Happy prints available, and you have until this Sunday, 12/15 11:59pm PT, to order them for arrival in time for gifting.

About the piece, Kennedy states: “I don't know where the quotation ‘Always Choose Happy’ came from”, explaining that it “best states my outlook on life.  No, I am not in a constant state of happiness, but memories of the happiness I have experienced lingers in my soul. Happiness is an agitation fueled by wonder.”

Kennedy’s remarkable career began as a commitment to this choice. Fueled by a longstanding interest in calligraphy and letters, the artist visited an 18th-century printing and book binding demonstration at age 40 and was so wowed that he began studying at a community-based letterpress studio in Chicago. Soon afterwards, he quit the day job he’d held for two decades to devote his life to his art.

Fast forward 36 years, and the formidable imprint Kennedy continues to make on the world of letterpress is undeniable. His work has been exhibited at institutions and galleries nationwide, including the library at MoMA, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, and Poster House and the New York Center for Book Arts, both of which hold his work in their permanent collections. He is also the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including being named Individual Laureate by the American Printing History Association in 2021 and Outstanding Printmaker by the Mid Atlantic Print Council in 2022. His new critically acclaimed book, Citizen Printer (Letterform Archive Books, 2024) features Always Choose Happy—and the piece is currently on display in San Francisco, CA at the Letterform Archive’s exhibition in support of the title (catch it before it’s gone if you’re in the Bay Area–it runs through January 2025!).

As beautifully stated by the Letterform Archive, Kennedy “is extremely outspoken about the impact of white supremacy and racism. These themes are reflected in Kennedy’s work and encompass the evolving trajectory of Black liberation in the United States. From growing up in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Era, to the rise of Black Nationalism in the 1970s, to the present Post-Civil Rights era, Kennedy has seen how these movements shaped Black identity in the United States and has drawn from this as inspiration.”

“I know that it is easier to live in a group of happy people than any other group. So, I encourage you to always choose happy”, Kennedy states. This beautiful piece is a shining reminder to do so.
