There’s so much mystery to this breathtaking image, which was taken sometime between 1880 and 1899. Though we know the gaff sloop’s name was Josephine, much of the vessel’s history—and the identity of its lone inhabitant—are now long gone. Sailors are ever mindful that the deep blue sea holds an ocean of secrets, so perhaps it is befitting that much remains unknown in Josephine. After all, what truly matters: man’s insignificance in relation to the vast ocean, the power and beauty of being out in the water—those are things no sailor will ever forget.
We think this would be a perfect present for Dad—the man who has helped you navigate all kinds of weather. If your Pops prefers adventures on land, we've got plenty more Father's Day gift ideas. Give him views of the open road by Bert Teunissen; gritty, sporting works by Yuji Yamada; or for a dad who schooled you on music, pay homage with CBGB photographs by Joseph O. Holmes.
Order unframed art for Dad by this Sunday, June 8 at 11:59 pm ET to have your gift arrive in time! **
With art for everyone,
