55 years ago today, humankind went on its biggest adventure yet: the first moon landing. In this truly iconic image, the footsteps of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin encircle the flagpole, the linear impression of the boot soles standing in stark contrast to the untouched lunar soil. It’s a symbolic scene that underscores the unfathomable consequence of the endeavor. The view they would have had looking back at their origin location would have been just as (arguably even more) epic. This photo was taken by Bill Anders the year before the moon landing, during one of our first forays into this vast landscape. Have a listen to Frank Borman and William Anders reacting to the vista.
HOWEVER, you don’t need to be an astronaut or a millionaire to enjoy adventures this exciting—they’re all around us. Take a hike, take a dive, take a drive. Find a new perspective on your city, or your backyard. Better yet, use your imagination—you can go anywhere. Whatever it is, have fun + be careful. As Bilbo says, "You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
