He's Back! New Prints by Master Disassembler Todd McLellan

We’re absolutely exploding with excitement to present a new pair from long-time 20x200 favorite Todd McLellan: Disassembled Brownie and Apart Brownie.

Todd McLellan has a way with objects. He deconstructs the things we think we know, recomposes them in elegant explosions or in painstakingly neat arrangements, and always leaves us utterly enthralled. His newest 20x200 duet explores the gears and guts of the beloved Kodak Brownie box camera in Apart Brownie and Disassembled Brownie.

As the son of a carpenter and an electrical technician, it’s hardly surprising that Todd McLellan has a penchant for taking things apart and appreciating their inner workings, with a particular predilection for all kinds of gadgetry. McLellan proves that an object is more than the sum of its parts, especially when photographed with his well-trained artistic eye. He carefully dismantles the objects—in this case, the Kodak Brownie—organizing and orchestrating every component into a new, striking assemblage. His work is both an exploration of design and a rumination on society’s rapidly changing technology.

Some of us here at 20x200 still own a Kodak Brownie camera, and when possible, find the time to use it. What is revealed to us in Todd McLellan’s images is how very complex this seemingly simple camera is. The perfection of Disassembled Brownie’s meticulous layout brings to light the multitude of tiny parts that make every image possible. And watching those same pieces flung every which way in Apart Brownie reminds us of the beauty of the Brownie’s design, inside and out.

We are so thrilled to add these two dazzling editions to our already amazing collection of images from Todd’s much-lauded series. We’re not the first to marvel at his work, which has been blogged (and reblogged and reblogged again) many times over the years and found an even bigger audience when with his book, Things Come Apartnow in its 5th printing—was published in 2013. It will connect with an even larger audience in September, when the Things Come Apart exhibition goes on tour with SITES, The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition program. (Todd, you fanceh fella!)
