An art + song jam sesh from Paul of The Record Store Day Podcast

Weekend musical interlude! Our new Art Mixtape stars song and art matchmaking care of musician, songwriter, and music journalist Paul Myers. You might have heard his work as frontman of The Gravelberrys or as part of The Paul & John. Music heads will wanna read A Wizard A True Star: Todd Rundgren In The Studio, the biography Myers penned re: the legendary Todd Rundgren. And Myers is also the host/producer of The Record Store Day Podcast.

If you’re not familiar, Record Store Day is the world’s largest single-day music event, launched in 2008 to celebrate indie record stores and the culture they cultivate. In the pre-pandemic world, that meant (in part) special in-person appearances and performances from recording artists—and a lot of foot traffic for independently owned record stores. In 2020, Record Store Day’s mission may be more important than ever, with so many small record shops threatened by Covid closures. To stay properly socially distanced, this year’s celebration involves three special release dates, or RSD Drops. And the first drop is today! Read more here.

In the meantime, don’t miss Myers playing it by ear with terrific tune + print pairings below.

I grew up as a musician and became a writer, but visual art has always been part of the deal for me, even before I had realized my passion for expressing myself through photography (which has become a vital part of who I am over the last decade) album cover art was tied up inextricably with the music inside the package. I frequently title my photographs after snatches of lyrics, album or song titles, and quite often I find myself thinking of songs as I press down the shutter while in the field. Visual art and music are a lot alike in that the best of both mediums draws us in and lets us wander around in their world to think and even to dream. — Paul Myers
